Year 7 Knowledge Organisers
September & October
The Ruby in the Smoke. A Knowledge Organiser for the class novel by Philip Pullman, including the plot, key characters and ideas. |
November & December
The class will explore genre writing together. This Knowledge Organiser is for those classes doing Gothic fiction (some classes may do other genres). |
January & February
The class will look at poems and analyse the ways poets present their ideas. This Knowledge Organiser offers a range of technical terms used in analysis (Year 7 would not be expected to be using lots of these!). |
March & April
The class will explore how nonfiction letters attempt to persuade their readers. Students will then try to write a persuasive letter of their own. This Knowledge Organiser offers persuasive vocabulary to help create a powerfully persuasive style. |
April & May
The class look at Shakespeare's The Tempest together. This Knowledge Organiser offers information on the plot, main characters and ideas of the play. |
June & July
The class will look at Stevenson's Treasure Island together, leading to a creative writing project. |

Year 8 Knowledge Organisers
September & October
The class study George Orwell's classic novel Animal Farm. This Knowledge Organiser offers details on plot, character, themes and context (which is important for this novel). |
November & December
The class explore creative writing together, particularly looking at the importance of shaping a strong narrative perspective. This Organiser example is for a unit based upon post-apocalyptic writing, but some classes cover other topics. |
January & February
The class look at the skills needed to analyse and compare different poems. This Knowledge Organiser offers technical terms which students will increasingly be asked to apply. |
March & April
The class look at a play by Shakespeare, analysing and writing an essay upon a taught scene. Linked are Knowledge Organisers on Much Ado About Nothing as well as As You Like It. |
May & June
The class analyse nonfiction texts and explore the skills needed to compare and contrast texts which argue from different perspectives on the same topic. This Knowledge Organiser offers the technical terms students will be asked to employ in analysis (not all of them!). |
May & June
Having analysed the nonfiction writing of others, the class compose a newspaper article of their own arguing their own point of view on a topic. This Knowledge Organiser offers detailed choices for this piece. |

The class will look at a range of 19th and early 20th century ghost stories.

September & October
Classes analyse John Steinbeck's Depression Era novel, Of Mice and Men. This Knowledge Organiser offers details of plot, character, themes and social context. |
November & December
Classes study Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, introducing more of the skills needed for GCSE next year. This Organiser outlines the main knowledge needed for the play. |
January & February
Classes study four poems for their GCSE English Literature course. This Knowledge Organiser offers technical terms used in poetry analysis. By Year 9, students should aim to experiment with more of these in their essays. |
March & April
Classes complete a nonfiction unit which prepares them for GCSE. As well as using the technical terms on the previous unit to analyse language use closely, students should be expanding their vocabulary in their writing using vocabulary from the Knowledge Organiser above. |
